Industrial grade speech recognition at Alegent Health

The idea for implementing speech recognition is really fuelled by the physicians and their need for quick documentation and the turnaround times that they need.

We have to make the physicians’ workflow and their day the most efficient that we can and it’s very time-consuming for them to sit and type something or to handwrite something. I think everyone would agree that if you ask a doctor to type something or to handwrite it, it’s going to be much shorter and less complete than if they can dictate it.

We’ve built up the anticipation with the physicians especially, so that they’ve been ready for a long time. We’re going this way; we kind of set the stage early. It’s a very paper-driven workflow historically; it’s not something that’s easy. You’ve always been dependent upon a barcode or dependent upon a note that was written by the technologist on an order requisition that has the barcode. We are deploying this along with our paperless workflow and it’s been extremely well-received.

We need to ensure we have better documentation to provide better patient care and it needs to be extremely timely, so that we can take the best advantage of the patients’ stay in the hospital – that they are treated appropriately and quickly.

We moved ahead with speech recognition – I think it was a good time. Dolbey had an application that would work for us with the backend front-end application being so well-integrated. We think the SpeechMagic dictionaries and the conversion factors have done extremely well. The profiles train quickly. I guess that’s how we gauge it on our end – if the conversion factor is there for speech-to-text, SpeechMagic has been quick and the accuracy of the new profiles coming up is pretty good.

I have felt that the Philips engine was the engine that provided that higher accuracy level for us.

We’ve seen an increase in the turnaround times, I mean the reports are coming back quicker. I think that the tran/scription department has become a lot more efficient, they’ve seen some efficiency gains with this product. We’re excited to get to the front-end technology where we can dictate and sign off in one step and be done with it.

Our goal at Alegent Health is to be a world-class provider of healthcare services. We believe that Philips SpeechMagic and Dolbey are in a position to help us achieve that goal of world-class leadership in health care. When I look at what is still out there on the market I think we still have the best product.
