Dr. Olive Robb, Radiologist, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen, UK
We went through a procurement process, which resulted in four vendors being short-listed. We looked at them, looking particularly at the accuracy of their voice recognition systems and their ability to integrate with our current work practices and our current RIS system.
We choose a Philips SpeechMagic-based system out of the four that we had short-listed. The frontend voice recognition system was our preferred option in order to speed up the availability of reports to clinicians, which was one of our principal aims in the exercise. We felt it was important that we increase the availability of reports to clinicians given the pressures, particularly within patient settings.
One of our principal aims in the integration with the RIS system was that the patient’s previous radiological history would be easily visible and accessible in the voice recognition screen that we were using, so that users didn’t have to have two applications open simultaneously in order to gain and improve user acceptance. We thought that having as few mouse clicks as possible for the system was important.
We found SpeechMagic to be a good system. It was in our testing priority. Choosing it was our option. We found it more accurate than another vendor and that has been maintained since we bought it. We find it easy to train with a short training time required and we have been convinced that it does indeed learn as it goes along, adapting to people’s pronunciation and to new words without difficulty.
