Philips Speech Recognition Systems CMO Nick van Terheyden, M.D. to help raise awareness about the critical role of accurate documentation in healthcare.
Vienna, Austria and Modesto, Calif., USA - Royal Philips Electronics (AEX: PHI, NYSE: PHG) today announced that the chief medical officer for its speech recognition business has been elected to the Medical Transcription Industry Association’s (MTIA) board of directors.
Nick van Terheyden, M.D. will help the MTIA and its members to deliver highest service quality and ensure they play an active, integral part in healthcare delivery. Dr. van Terheyden’s nomination allows Philips Speech Recognition Systems to further pursue its mission of maximizing patient safety by helping to ensure accurate and fast healthcare documentation.
"The role of the transcription industry is continuing to evolve as more technological innovation is applied. This demands close cooperation between the technology providers and the technology users to help deliver the best outcome for the customers – physicians and their patients in need of a fast, safe and successful treatment," said Dr. van Terheyden.
Documentation is the life blood of healthcare. However, inaccurate or delayed medical results, unsearchable printed reports, and unstructured patient information have created a situation which contributes to more than 98,000 deaths per year, according to the Institute of Medicine. The transcription industry can make a true difference to the healthcare experience that goes far beyond fast turnaround times.
"Dr. van Terheyden’s election to the board will support the medical transcription industry’s efforts to achieve long term sustainable growth and become part of a much needed solution to the healthcare system," said MTIA Chief Executive Officer Peter Preziosi, Ph.D., CAE. "His involvement with MTIA stretches many years with multiple presentations and participation at all levels. A close personal and professional relationship with many of our members and directors allows him to provide clinical and technical insight that helps shape the future of our organization."
Dr. Nick van Terheyden is a pioneer in the evolution of healthcare technology. A graduate of the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine at the University of London, he practiced as a medical practitioner in London and Australia and became a passionate advocate for the application of information technology to raise patient safety. He puts his medical and technology expertise to work for Philips customers who are striving to raise the bar for healthcare delivery. Dr. van Terheyden is a sought-after speaker on the practical and futuristic use of technology as a necessary adjunct in quality patient care.
