Philips speech recognition technology chosen for Danish parliament
June 15, 2006
Vienna, Austria – Royal Philips Electronics (AEX: PHI, NYSE: PHG) announced today that its speech recognition technology SpeechMagic has been chosen in an EU tender and will be integrated into the Danish parliament's Official Report publishing system.
The speech recognition system will shorten the turnaround time of reports from the parliament’s proceedings. Philips SpeechMagic not only boasts specialized vocabularies for medical and legal organizations, but this new project also proves that the industrial-grade speech recognition technology is highly flexible and able to process spoken information from the wide range of topics typical in a parliamentary environment.
The Danish parliament aims to publish 85% of all reports on the Internet within two or three hours after a speech has been held. Thus, journalists and the public will be able to access reports within a short period of time. Philips will deliver the SpeechMagic Software Development Kit as well as a special ConText (vocabulary) for the Danish parliament. The Philips partners Prolog Development Center A/S and Max Manus A/S will provide the speech recognition application, powered by SpeechMagic™, as part of the complete solution delivered by IT service provider TietoEnator, which also includes workflow analysis and system usability. Starting in May 2006, project completion is planned for October 2007.
The Danish parliament has decided to introduce speech recognition in parallel with a cross-disciplinary collaboration project initiated by the Danish Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. This project includes live television subtitling which enables the hearing impaired to follow important political events and current affairs programs on TV.
"This expansion is another major deployment of Philips speech recognition technology in Denmark, covering the entire variety of general spoken language, not only a subset in a specialized context," says Bjoern Aune, Regional Sales Director at Philips Speech Recognition Systems.
With SpeechMagic, documentation-intensive organizations can effectively increase productivity and reduce administration costs. SpeechMagic is a software development kit for professional document management solutions, it supports 23 recognition languages, and is implemented in more than 8,000 professional sites in 45 nations.
